Raleigh-Durham International Airport Canopies
Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina

Architect & Engineer: HNTB
Owner: The Raleigh Durham International Airport Authority (RDU)

The RDU International Airport fabric structures for parking garages 3 and 4 consist of five (5) very different and unique tensioned fabric structures:

Raleigh-Durham International Airport The Atrium Lightwell Roof Enclosures, located on the sixth level of parking structure #4 and the fifth level of garage #3 are nominally rectangular in plan and cover approximately 50,000 sq. ft. These column-free roofs span nearly 100' high above the garage atrium and provide daylighting and protection to the patrons of this growing airport, while their fabric translucency provides a diffuse and beautiful backlit appearance during nighttime hours.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport The Entrance Facility Canopy, rectangular in plan with one long side having a scalloped edge to generate attractive curvature. The dimensions are 35' x 130' covering a plan area of 4,550 sq. ft. Raleigh-Durham International Airport
Raleigh-Durham International Airport The Exit Facility Canopy, nominally a rhombus in plan with one long side having a scalloped edge to generate curvature. The dimensions are 175' x 40' covering a plan area of 7,000 sq. ft. Raleigh-Durham International Airport
Raleigh-Durham International Airport The North and South Helix Structures are unique architectural components of the up and down spiral car ramps for parking structure #4, and are approximately 80' high with a 50' diameter. Each unit contains 7,500 sq. ft. of fabric surface area and has a brim on top of 100 feet in diameter. Essentially upside down conic fabric shapes, they act as giant funnels which are dramatically lit from the inside for a uniform roof-to-ground appearance. Raleigh-Durham International Airport

All fabric structures at this facility are made from Duraskin PTFE (Teflon®) coated fiberglass fabric from Verseidag Indutex and fabricated by Span Systems.

These unique structures provide the growing RDU Airport and its travelers with beautiful diffuse daylight by day and wonderful glow to the airport facilities by night. These fabric structures have withstood severe weather and near-hurricane-force winds with superior results for the growing triangle area.
